The Ganga Arati conducted at Chhote Lal Durga Prasad ghat (almost adjacent to Asia’s largest flower market – the Mullick ghat flower market ) – is probably the only place in Kolkata where you can perform the arati yourself.
But here at Bagbazar Ghat, for the last 5 years (started by Ganga Mission Welfare Society from the 22 nd of August 2010) there has been taking place another form of the Ganga Arati – which resembles the Benarasi style( from the holy city of Benaras ), although on a smaller scale.
The Ganga Arati at Bagbazar Ghat takes place 365 days of the year, starting roughly from 6.30 pm in the evening (On weekends it may start a little late)
The preparations start almost an hour ago, cleaning the stairs, preparing the ‘oil lamps’, making seating arrangements for the people who gather everyday to witness this wonderful event.
The oil lamp is prepared by individually soaking the cotton buds in oil and placing them into the corresponding slots.
It begins with the blowing of the conch by the two priests.
The oil lamps are lit and ready . Step by step, one after the other the priests perform the Arati with utmost devotion and perfect synchronization.
The air filled with the aroma of the amber incense sticks and camphor (Korpur) from the lamps.
The Ganga Arati at Bagbazar Ghat is an absolute feast for the eyes. You have to watch it yourself to feel the devotion and energy.
So when are you planning to witness this wondrous event ?
